From the Publisher:

On the eve of their fortieth wedding anniversary, the Seagraves are among the most enviable couples of Miramonte, California, and still deeply in love - until the night Lydia Seagrave picks up a gun and shoots her husband. Novelist Daphne returns home and is forced to contend not only with her father’s murder but also with her undeniable feelings for the only man she has ever loved - the D.A. who is prosecuting her mother. Youngest daughter Alex is determined to clear her father’s name. Kitty sets out to vindicate her mother and enters headlong into a passionate love affair with a younger man. As the devastated sisters come together to unravel the family lies, they must each rebuild a life that is honest, even at the risk of being painful.

:

There couldn't have been more than a dozen or so, but equipped with Minicams, boom mikes, and handheld flashes, they appeared to be an army. Kitty, eyeing in alarm the reporters that swarmed over the concrete walkway and onto the lawn, seized hold of her sister's hand, gripping it tightly.

'The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold,' " muttered Daphne darkly. They were standing just outside the entrance to Jasper, beneath an overhang that partially hid them from view. Kitty, who'd gotten an eyeful of the horde gathered outside while waiting downstairs for Daphne, shot her a questioning look. Daphne clued her in. ''A line from Byron. Clearly he knew a thing or two about the press - they look as if they could eat us for breakfast, and still be hungry for lunch. Any ideas?"

"If we keep our heads down and our mouths shut, we'll be okay."

Kitty sounded more certain than she felt. Deep down, she wasn't at all sure of her ability to make it from here to her car without her knees, weak as an invalid's, collapsing under her.

As they headed toward the fray, she felt Daphne slip an arm through hers. "Remember, if we can get through this, we can get through anything," she whispered fiercely under her breath.

"Hey, it's the daughters!" a man's voice bellowed. "Hold up there, ladies!" A large man wearing an Oakland Raiders cap loomed into view, bearing a Nikon the size of a toaster anchored about his hairy neck by a rainbow-colored strap.

Someone else yelled, "Any word on your mother?"

"She sticking to her confession?" shouted another.
