The Envelope Please

Every year around this time I become an Oscar “widow.” As many of you know, my husband Sandy covers entertainment for a living, so on the Big Night while I’m in my Oscar gown (meaning my nightgown) he’s out of the red carpet mingling with the stars. This will mark his 24th (or is it 25th?) Academy Awards ceremony. When anyone asks him what he wants to do when he retires, he’ll invariably say, “Watch the Academy Awards at home on TV, with my wife!”

This year there was a new wrinkle. His dad passed away last week. Sandy had flown down to Atlanta the week before to say his good-byes. And since there was to be no funeral—his dad was cremated with a memorial service to come—it was decided he would keep his date with the red carpet and fly back to Atlanta to be with his mom when it was over. The hard part, though, is handling it emotionally, as any of you who’s lost a parent knows. And to have to suck it up while on camera…that’s a whole other challenge. Each day leading up to the Oscars when I would see Sandy on TV doing his reports from the red carpet, on WABC-TV, I was blown away by his professionalism. No one would ever guess he’d just lost his beloved dad. Now that’s a true performer!

So, as far as I’m concerned, this year’s Best Actor award went to my husband, Sandy Kenyon. His name may not have been the one on the envelope, but it’s in an even better place – in my heart.

It's so hard to know...
Comment from: Dianna (Guest)
It's so hard to know our husbands are grieving and there is nothing we can do to help them.  My husband lost both of his parents within a few years of each other and I think it was harder for me watching him "be strong" than it might have been if he's just broken down.  Please send my condolences to Sandy, I'm so sorry about the loss.
