A trip down memory lane

Off to California today to visit family & friends.  Haven’t been back in 3 years, not since my mom passed away.

While there, I will also be attending my elementary school class reunion, class of ’64.  47 years!  Yikes! Is it possible?  I went to a small school in a community that was fairly rural back then (it’s more built up since the freeway that made it an S.F. exurb) with a graduating class of only about 30 kids.  Many of us lived near each other, so we were like a large family or maybe a small tribe.  We played together and swam in each other’s pools.  We rode horses together and went to each other’s birthday parties.

And here we are, nearly half a century later, gathering once more.  Gray hairs, wrinkles, and hip replacements notwithstanding, we’re still here…still the same kids underneath the less-than-firm skin.  We will march in the town’s May Day parade, then later on have some drinks and share some laughs and memories.  We’ll talk about when Cal went bareback riding on a “borrowed” horse.  When our gym teacher had a nervous breakdown on the baseball diamond.  When the Pope came to town and we stood outside the school and watched the motorcade go by.  And when JFK was shot and we went to the church across from the school and prayed.  A lot of water under the bridge since then, but not so much that we’ve forgotten who and what we are and where we came from.

I’m looking forward to reconnecting with that part of my past.  Memory lane here I come….
