A Tour of Savannah

Sandy and I had a lovely week in Savannah.  Ever since I first visited the city with my former husband I’d been wanting to go back, but it was some years (and another husband) before my return.  We spent the week traveling the city by foot.  Yes, it was hot, but we were saved by the shade of all those trees.  There is more greenery per square inch in Savannah, I think, than in any other city in the country.  Also, more antiquity.  Many of its buildings date back to the Revolutionary War period.  We had fun exploring, wandering down back alleys (even the carriage houses are grand!) and poking our heads into municipal buildings.  Hopefully we walked (and sweated) off enough calories to make up for all that delicious Low Country food (and barbecue).  Fried green tomatoes anyone?

Oh, one more thing.  When I die, bury me in Bonaventure Cemetery.  I swear, it has to be one of the most peaceful spots on earth that’s within shouting distance of a city.  It was wonderful wandering the oak-shaded lanes lined with family plots in which generation upon generation of family members are buried, going back to the Civil War and beyond.  We enjoyed communing with the ghosts amid a symphony of cicadas and the sound of the river off in the distance.

When our flight home was cancelled due to a tornado watch in the Northeast, I wouldn’t have minded if it had meant staying another day in Savannah.  Alas, an airport hotel is a destination all its own and not one I would ever choose.  But we made the best of it by hoofing a half mile to the nearest outpost of civilization, where I was able to restock on underwear at WalMart.  Whoop de doo. From the sublime to the ridiculous…
